This gripping tale, of the first settlers to the Dakota Territory, is a great read. Imagine surviving a winter in a one-room sod house, without electricity, water, or a furnace. Imagine doing all your cooking, washing, and heating on a stove heated by twists of straw, because there are no forests to gather wood from. Imagine looking out your door to miles and miles of prairie stretching as far as your eye can see, from horizon to horizon. Could you survive? Would you stay?
